Accessing local database from .NET application

I wonder which approach is best when using .NET to develop network
applications that have to use both central and local data. Number of
application service providers grow, and quite often users would like to
combine remote application (that they don't have to maintain or upgrade
themself) with local data (such as product database, employee list etc.)
Often local data information is private and shouldn't be transferred over
the net in whole. What can be used then? Install a local Web server that
will cooperate with remote site? Implement COM objects (ActiveX controls)
that will be used by browser locally? All such solutions not very elegant,
and it will be interesting to know if .NET introduces something that can
make integrating local and remote data more smooth.

Thanks in advance
