3-Tier Client/Server Benchmarking

3-Tier Client/Server Benchmarking

Post by Patrick J. Cuff J » Wed, 28 Aug 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

Has anyone out there done any benchmarking, performance testing, etc., on
3-tier client/server applications?  Are there any tips, tricks and techniques
you can share?  Are there any tools or utilities you found useful?

I'm about to begin benchmarking a 3-tier c/s app with the following
characteristcs:
Clients running Win95 or WinNT 3.51 on Intel platform.
Application Server running WinNT 3.51 on DEC AlphaServer 2100 4/200.
Database Server running WinNT 3.51/MS SQL Server 6.5 on the same DEC
        Alpha as the Application Server.

I'm new to this whole benchmarking thing, so any guidence someone can offer
would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

-- Pat

I'm not sure if you're going to note better performance with
many 3-tier systems.  The benfit of 3-tier is scalability.
Many 2-tier system may even be faster, however, they can only
scale to around 200-300 users (depending on your database
server and server OS).   In contrast 3-tier systems can
multiplex connections, therefore 3-tier removes the database
connection per client rule, and thus can support many more
clients.

All of the TPC-C benchmarks use TP monitors, and therefore
are 3-tier by the way.  It's safe to assume that database
vendors are able to process more transactions using a TP
monitor.

This is not correct.  All of the MS SQL Server 6.5 TPC marks are
without a TPM.  So are the DB2/400 benchmarks.  I'd say it's
safe to say some vendors think so, some don't. (just like endusers)

It actually started before 6.5. The TPC-C benchmarks for SQL Server 6.0 were with ODBC clients and without a TP monitor.
