tried everything i can think of

that message persists. ive even upgraded pppd to 2.2.0, same damn thing.
tried the ISP's suggestions, everything in the man page, etc. etc. No go.

Is your ISP really using PAP? How is your setup, are you using
pap-secrets? Is it configured properly? What are your options for
pppd?  

We need more info of your setup.
