LCP problem (Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:)

Post by Jason Johnso » Tue, 25 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I have just installed Linux Redhat 4.2 about 2 weeks ago.  I would like
to go completely to this as an OS, but cannot, since I can't get the
modem to stay connected.

I have included a (relevant) clipping from syslog (/var/log/messages),
with kdebug set at 21, for pppd, below.  As you can see I am sending LCP
requests, and apparently not receiving anything back (or at least
nothing 8N1).  I spoke with my ISP, and all there modems are set to
8N1.  I have read all DOC I can find on this, and have troubleshot this
to the best of my ability.  I have recompiled to the newest stable
kernel.  I have tried every command line option that I have ever read
about that seems, even remotely, relevant.  I have even compiled a
kernel with a SLIP slip setting for 6-bit encapsulation, although I
doubt that that would be related to this problem.  All efforts have been
bitter failures.

I have 3 suspicions:

1.  The problem is caused because I have a p-n-p modem (although, I use
the BIOS setup utility to
turn off p-n-p for my PC).  I saw a reference in here once about
"isapnptools".  Where would I
    go about finding these tools?

2.  Perhaps a problem with this version of pppd (2.0.0)?  I have not
upgraded to the newest version,
because I have not yet given up on this one.

3.  My modem is simply not set at 8N1, when pppd gets control of it.
Are there any AT commands
that I can use to set it?

LCP problem (Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:)

Post by Jason Johnso » Tue, 25 Aug 1998 04:00:00

Thank you.  I configured pppd from X.  It would appear that even though I put
in my login, and password, netconfigurator did not add that to the file.

I still cannot get logged on (modem connects, then just hangs up), but I am
sure it will just be a matter of time (or getting the right software), to fix
this problem.

Thanks, again,

Jason

1. Receive Serial Link is not 8-Bit Clean

Hi,

I was wondering whether anyone knows what causes the following error message
when I try to connect via PAP to my ISP (edited from my /var/log/messages
file:

My chatscript is:

  TIMEOUT 5
 "" AT&F
 OK ATDT94348011
 ABORT "NO CARRIER"
 ABORT BUSY
 ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
 ABORT WAITING
 TIMEOUT 45
 CONNECT ""

If I add the following to the end of the script it works fine :

 ervice "p"
 name "<username>"
 word "<passwd>"

My dial script is:

 exec pppd connect \
 'chat -v -f /etc/ppp/chatscript' \
 -detach crtscts modem defaultroute \
 /dev/modem 57600

I've checked the RPM howto: it doesn't shed any light. My ISP does support
PAP and I am able to connect fine via a script with the abovementioned
addition.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for any light you can shed.
