DEPCA AA and DEC Mouse/ DEC "bus" mice in general

Post by David Longle » Thu, 22 Feb 1996 04:00:00

I started with a Digital mouse with a PS/2 like connector which isn't of
course PS/2 *or* bus mouse compatible. So I then got hold of a full length
Digital DEPCA AA network card with mouse port. Unfortunately, it won't boot
in my machine (a standard problem with DEC cards apart from the Turbo 3 in
my machines).

So - is there such a thing as a DIGITAL network card with mouse port like
the Turbo 3 or is there a Digital Mouse card which my mouse will work with?

(And work under Windows 3.11...and DOS 6.22 . .. just playing safe!).

If I remember correctly, that goes back to the war between IBM and Microsof=
t =

over their two bus mouse styles. IBM won, but there are still are still alo=
t of =

the Microsoft InPort mice around. What machine do you have? Why won't it bo=
ot? =

What NOS are you running? =

The only card DEC made with a mouse port was the DEPCA-AA long board.

Let me know more; I have piles of old DEPCA cards and Msoft Inport cards.

Have you also got the DEC keyboard which plugs into that DEPCA board?
If you haven't, then I am not surprised it won't boot.
If you have, I am a bit surprised.....

A few years back now, I installed quite a few of these boards to various
types of machines, and only one (a Compaq...but no reflexion on them) would
not work, although, at the time I tied it down to some weird memory board.

I _think_ the keyboard is an LK 250, and may be interchangeable with the
keyboard from an old VAXmate.

Geez!   I take it you are _not_ serious about running nostalgic and obsolete
stuff!    ;-)

It's a nice mouse. I just want to use the mouse. How can I use the mouse
EXCEPT via these 'obsolete' products? Is there are adapter which will let
me plug the mouse into my serial port?

1. What is a DFMSA-AA (DEC "Mini-Exchange") good for?

I was rifling through a pile of DEC stuff and came across a DFMSA-AA.  It
has 8 DB-25F connectors (numbered 1 through 8 w/"modem" on 8), a loopback
connector and 4 LEDs, all on the back.  When it is powered on, the LEDs
flash the binary equivalent of the port number that is being looped back.
Also, it appears to listen for DTR on any port, bringing DSR high for
~15 seconds (if nothing is typed) or until a certain quantity of keystrokes
has been sent (depending on the exact key).

Is this some sort of asynch-DECnet routing box?  I've never seen anything
like it before.  It's got an Intel 8031 microcontroller inside w/an EPROM
and RS232 line-drivers as well as several square inches of TTL logic.

Thanks,
-ethan
