                CALL FOR PAPERS
2002 IEEE Workshop on Speech Synthesis
Dedicated to the memory of Michael Macon
Sponsored by the IEEE Signal Processing Society
               September 11-13, 2002
               Santa Monica, CA, USA

A workshop on speech synthesis, sponsored by the IEEE Signal
Processing Society will be held on September 11-13, 2002, at the
DoubleTree Hotel, Santa Monica, California.
The workshop is a satellite workshop of ICSLP 2002
(http://www.icslp2002.org)
which will be held September 16-20, 2002 in Denver, Colorado.
The workshop will focus on recent advances and new paradigms in
speech synthesis. Technical papers are solicited for presentation at the
workshop especially in the following areas:

1. Speech analysis, representations and models, voice
alteration/transformation for speech synthesis

2. Data-driven systems; offline and online unit selection for
concatenative synthesis

3. Statistical linguistic processing parsers, taggers, etc., natural
language generation and integrated language generation and synthesis

4. Prosody models and prosody generation, synthesizing emotions
and expressive speech

5. Rule-based synthesizers, articulatory synthesizers

6. Multi-lingual speech synthesis systems

7. Hybrid schemes: interplay between data-driven and rule-based
approaches, application of HMM-based techniques to synthesis, etc.

8. Speech databases and tools and evaluation of speech synthesis systems

Papers in other areas of speech synthesis are also welcome.

The Doubletree Hotel Santa Monica is just blocks away from the
historic Santa Monica Pier, the Pacific Ocean Beaches, and the Third
Street Promenade with its outdoor cafes and restaurants. It is an easy
driving distance from the Los Angeles International Airport, Beverly
Hills and downtown Los Angeles.

Prospective authors are invited to submit a 4-page photo-ready
paper electronically. See http://www.research.att.com/conf/ttsworkshop/
for updates and instructions.  Authors are discouraged from submitting
the same
paper to both the TTS workshop and ICSLP, although papers describing
related work but with a different focus are permitted.

In addition to workshop proceedings, selected papers are to be published
as
a book. Attendance will be limited with priority given to those who
submit
written technical contributions.

Organizing Committee:
General Chair: Juergen Schroeter (AT&T Labs-Research);
Technical Chairs: Abeer Alwan (UCLA) and Shrikanth Narayanan (USC)
Publications/Publicity Chair: Colin Wightman (Minnesota State
University)
Finance Chairs: Mazin Rahim (AT&T Labs-Research) and Dave Schulz (AT&T
Labs-Research)
Far-east Liason: Nick Campbell (ATR, Japan)
European Liason: Thierry Dutoit (Faculte Polytechnique de Mons, Belgium)
Local Arrangements Coordinator and Technical Secretary: Gloria Halfacre
(USC)

Keynote Speakers:
 Alan Black (CMU)
 Mari Ostendorf (U. Washington)
 Jan van Santen (OGI)
 Mohan Sondhi (Avaya)
 Kenneth Stevens (MIT)

There will also be a governmental panel featuring Drs. Gary Strong
(NSF), and James Bass (DARPA), and representatives from other
agencies. The panel will discuss research directions and
new initiatives that involve speech synthesis as well as
government mandates regarding supporting audio access to websites via
TTS.
