DECpc 466D2LP video problem -- wrong colors @ 16-bit Hicolor

Post by pamin » Tue, 18 Aug 1998 04:00:00

DEC 486DX4 with integrated video S3 924.

I am getting some color corruption when using 16-bit Hicolor -- black
displays as blue.  This problem happens at all resolutions.  256-color
works OK.  Problem shows up in both Win3.1x and Win95.

Is it possible to correct this through the [Display] section of
SYSTEM.INI?

Thanks

Nope. Sounds like buggy drivers (gee, on an S3 chipset? Never happens!)

Try getting drivers for the 924 from www.s3.com, or if that's where you got
them from, try ones from Digital (err, Compaq, whoever the hell it is this
week.)

The S3 drivers that come with Win95 are usually bad.

Thanks for the reply Aaron.  Boy, I sure did my homework on this one.

Unfortunately, s3.com has no Win95 drivers for the 924 on their web
site and neither does DEC.  I am using the stuff that came with win95.

MS Knowledge Base Article ID: Q132625 from my MSDN:
"S3 Adapter Using High Color Resolution May Have Blue Tint"

I tried that solution but it didn't work for me -- it is very short so
I'll quote it here for the benefit of all since it applies to all S3
and not just DEC machines:

_________________________

SYMPTOMS
When you are using a High Color resolution (with more than 256 colors)
with an S3 video adapter, the colors on the screen may have a blue
tint.

CAUSE
The S3 display driver is using a different High Color mode from the
mode set in the video BIOS.

RESOLUTION
To correct this problem, add the following line to the [display]
section of the System.ini file and then restart your computer:

   HighColor=15

This setting forces the S3 driver to use the 555 mode.

MORE INFORMATION
A High Color mode can have one of two variations: a 555 mode or a 565
mode. In the 555 mode, the blue component of the color is in the low
five bits, the green component is in the next five bits, and the red
component is in the following five bits. The high bit is not used. In
the 565 mode, the low five bits are for blue, the next six are for
green, and the last five are for red.

Gaaaack. You are indeed correct.

I am more suspicious that, rather than being a configurable "feature", this is
a plain ole bug. Especially under Win3.1, I had BAD luck with the S3 chipsets
on many cards -- and perfectly good luck with others. The issue is that many
manufacturers take the chipset, mess with it, and THEN plow it out into
systems, and hack at the S3 generic drivers so they usually work, sort of. ;-(

How-some-ever, as we only have the one set of drivers to deal with, as you
say... give up ;-(

That or disable that video and put in, say, a Cirrus or Trident, which will
guarantee you bad results. ;-)

My wife uses this machine.  Maybe I should switch it to Hicolor
anyway, she might like the kaleidoscopic-psychedelic look!  She also
drives a red 300Z and she never noticed that it doesn't have back
seats.  :)

DECpc 466D2LP video problem -- wrong colors @ 16-bit Hicolor

Post by Fred Brow » Sun, 23 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I too have had the same problem with my DECpc 466D2LP. I've only noticed the
problem if I switch modes using the Windows 95 QuickRes option. If I reboot
after switching to 16-bit HiColor, I get all the colors correctly. Of course
if I switch back to 256 colors I have a problem.

I suggest that you switch to Hicolor and completely reboot. As long as you
stay in that mode, you should be ok. You'll also need the upgrade to 1MB of
video RAM. By default, the DECpc LPs only came with 512MB Video RAM.

Regards,

Fred Brown

1. 16 bit problem, 8 bit works fine, please help

I have a Digital PC with a soundcard problem

I can't get a 16 bit soundcard to work, while a
8 bit card is not a problem. I have checked (see
underneath) all IRQ's and DMA's, but still can't
get the soundcard to work.
I've also tried to get other 16 bit soundcards
to work, but found the same problems.

The computer acts like the 16 bit soundcards
are working fine, but in the mean while I don't
get any sound (tried three 16 bit boards)

Does anybody have the same problem or is there
a servicepack that solves the problem?

16 Soundcard
        Media Vision Pro Audio Deluxe/Jazz-16

Is regognized by the system.
Installation through 'Add New Hardware', no problem, no sound
