They have also been refered to by color, with tops-blue being
Tops-10 and tops-orange being Tops-20.  Obscure refs have been
made to tops-black, which would be pre-6.04 LIR (limited interim
release) which was often seen on the early KA10's (both of mine,
serial numbers 9 and 44, were black), though I think I had some
DF10 and RC10 (and of course the BeerCooler10) gear which was
blue....

Of course, that pretty sea-breeze blue that the PDP6 came in was
pretty cool.

At Twente University we have had a (blue) 1080 since 1977
and an (orange) 2040 since 1981, both running TOPS-10.
It was 1984, I believe, when the 1080 was replaced by a 2060 and the 2040
was upgraded to a 2060. The intention was to convert to TOPS-20, but
looking at the future of TOPS-10/20 and the local modifications that had been
made, both machines were kept running TOPS-10 until they were discarded.
The last one was powered down in 1989, if I remember correctly.
So, we have had orange 2060's running TOPS-10 for more than 5 years.
We allways thought of them as being pretty special, running TOPS-10 on
orange hardware :-)

(Incidentaly the first 2060 that was put to sleep, was replaced by a _blue_
VAX8650...)

You should have painted the machine the correct color one weekend...

At Hatfield Poly we used the bax colours for the network node names;
BLUE for the 1091 running TOPS-10
ORANGE for the 2010 running TOPS-10
PURPLE for the 11/70 running RSTS/E (and what these days might be
called ?'an ANF-10 compliant server' fielding tasks )( I wrote that! )
