6/8/12X vs 24X CD-ROMS?

6/8/12X vs 24X CD-ROMS?

Post by Owlma » Fri, 12 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I have had a 4X CD-ROM for about 3 years.  I'm about to upgrade my
system and am wondering whether I need to also upgrade by CD-ROM.  It
works well for many things, but I also experience a lot of times when
the system won't recognize the CD-ROM (esp. with my mapping programs for
some reason).

Can someone plez bring me up to date on the status of these devices?  Is
a 24X really that much better than a 6/8/12X?  I understand that the
fast units whine because of the high speed.  One person said that it was
quite annoying.  Is this true?  Do others folks find that their CD-ROM
drives recognize the disk every time or do you also experience periodic
times when they just aren't clicking?

As I am trying to make a decision pretty quickly, your help is MOST
appreciated.

Thanx

Stan

My wife and I both have Toshiba 24x CD-ROMS and while they're quiet,
they're overkill IMO.  Furthermore, I've since read that 24x isn't
always 24x.  Something about the location on the disc determines the
access speed.  Typical advertising, IOW.  OTOH, Toshiba's are cheap.

Thanks,

Tom

6/8/12X vs 24X CD-ROMS?

My friend recently upgraded his 2X CDROM to a 24X.  It seemed like a good
deal at the time, but I'm not so sure anymore.  Whenever I'm using his
computer, it takes a long time to load up Windows Explorer.  And it seems
that it spins down almost as soon as you're done with it.  Another thing is
that it spins so hard that it rattles the case a bit and makes this annoying
noise.  IMO, I wouldn't keep it, but he says he's gonna keep it.

I've still got a 2X, and it may be slow, but it's quiet, and it doesn't take
forever to access the drive.
I'm also going to be upgrading soon, but I was looking more towards a 8X or
12X.  I don't know of any program that requires anything that fast yet.
Maybe some games, but oh well....

Good luck in the search...

6/8/12X vs 24X CD-ROMS?

    www.plextor.com

Makes a VERY quiet, stable 32x CD-ROM, the only draw-back... you need a
SCSI card.

The model is the Plextor 14/32 Plex, which spins between 14x and 32x,
I've benchmarked no slower than 22x (my "old" 24x IDE drive only benchmarked
at 16x).  If you have the hardware I highly recommend it for noise and speed

Slightly cheaper is the Plextor 12/20 Plex which spins between 12x and
20x ...

6/8/12X vs 24X CD-ROMS?

There are two types of CD drives. Constant Angular Velocity and Constant
Liner Velocity.
CAV is better, as the disk spins at a constant speed, with write speeds
varying on position.
For example the AOpen(ACER) 32x CD reads at 16x at the inside edge, and 32x
at the outside edge.
CLV is a lot slower, as the drive has to wait for the disk to settle at it's
new speed before it can read it. Slows down performance, etc.

Don't forget that a HDD transfer rate is equiv. to a 32x CD drive. Buy a
larger drive and copy the CD to it.

Hope this helps
