Hi, I have a Packard Bell computer and have replaced the cd-rom just over
a month ago.  Now, the cd-rom plays some music cd's but won't recognize my
windows 95 or other data disks. When I boot up the computer the driver is
loading and the busy light come on the cd-rom but when I insert a data
disk (Windows 95) it shows there's no disk in drive D insert a disk and
try again. I'm running WFWG 3.11  The cd-rom is a CR-563-B

Reboot your computer with the win95 cdrom. Make sure smartdrv.exe is
loaded, check
the autoexec.bat. Use file manager to refresh the cdrom drive.

1. CD-ROM Reads Music CD's or DATA CD's (Not Both)

My CD-ROM will play music CD's or data CD's but not both without having to
re-boot in between.  The system is a little over 1 year old and consists of
an ABit P5A-B mainboard with an AMD K6 400Mhz  CPU, 64megs SDRAM and a 1.08gb
Seagate hard drive.
Everything seems to have been working correctly for about the first 10-11
months but lately I've been having the abovementioned problem.
I thought that it was a hardware problem.   I assumed that the 40x CD-ROM
(Sony 4011-10) was going bad so I bought a brand-new 48x Sony 4811 yesterday
and it's doing the exact same thing.
If I play music CD's, it works just fine.  When I change to a data CD it
gives me a message that it is scanning the CD drive.  It locks up the system
and I can't do anything else until after I hit the power switch and re-boot.
If I start by playing data cd's it works alright 'til I put in a music cd.
At that point I get the scanning the drive message and total lockup.
Last night I upgraded(?) from Windows '95B to Windows 98SE and everything
seemed to be working correctly once again so I shut it off and went to bed.
This morning I got up and turned it on and the darn thing is doing the same
lockup  thing again.
The CD-ROM was originally installed as the master drive on the secondary IDE
port with no other drives installed on that port.  The hard drive was
installed as the only drive on the primary IDE port.  This morning I made the
hard drive the master in a two drive system on the primary IDE port and
installed the CD-ROM as the slave on the primary IDE port.  Now it won't read
music CD's at all.
Anybody got any suggestions  about what to try next.
Help will be appreciated.
Jerry
