How do you check your DNS is working??

From multiple locations. The server itself. A system on the same
network that is using that name server. A system on the same network
that is using a different name server. A system on another network
that is using a different Internet name server [unless your network is
not supposed to be visible from the Internet].

Also check your log file output when 'named' starts up. No errors?
Good. Warnings? Learn what they mean, and fix if you can.
