Graphics only on some machines

Graphics only on some machines

Post by Kevin Rosmanit » Sat, 09 May 1998 04:00:00

I'm trying to build a fledgling site and I'm testing out a possible
template to see if it works for me....

Anyone with a knack for HTML know why some of my images wont load on
other machines? I only tested on one other and some of the images didn't
come up....they DO work on my machine even on the web. I can't find the
said images in any of my folders (the "default" one, "private" and
"images") so I cant track down this prob.

Also...I couldnt get two pages to load on this web.  Im positive all the
hyperlinks were set up correctly but these pages didnt work.  Through
sheer trail and error I managed to get them to work but only by setting
up the hyperlinks destinations as http://www.(the actual location of the
page).  This seems backwards to me.  Shouldnt these pages load if I have
them set up as internal links? I assume using http:// means they're
external....

Are these two problems related? If any of you wizards you arent sick of
helping me out yet wanna have a look at the actual "problem web" check
it out at <http://members.home.net/krosm/index.htm>.

Any feedback is very welcome and super appreciated...I'm very new with
this and want to make this project as error free as possible and still
attractive (Like all of us I'm sure!)

Thanks lots and if anyone want s some feedback in return let me know and
I'll help ya out :)

Kevin,

It is just as I suspected - Your broken hyperlinks are file-based links,
rather than http links. The clue was when you said that you could see them
on your machine (the files are on your machine, in the locations described
by the links). There are several ways in which this can occur using FP. The
most common is not saving the files to the web when you save the page.
Another is when you open the page and edit it without opening the web on the
server first (probably the case with you, since you also have hyperlinks to
pages which are file-based). The solution is to open the web on the server,
import the images to the images folder you wish to store them in, and
replace the images in the pages with the images on the web.

Hope this helps,

1. Published graphics show link to my local machine

I imported a website to a blank web, made some changes
and reposted to the web server. Now all the graphics show
my local drive as the source an don't display when
accessed via www. I read a similar posting here
(http://communities.microsoft.com/newsgroups/previewFrame.
asp?
ICP=prod_office&sLCID=us&sgroupURL=microsoft.public.frontp
age.client&sMessageID=%

253E), but the solution won't work for me as I have
already overwritten the original site, and no backup is
available.

How can I recover from this?
