help! disappearing text??

Post by Edna » Mon, 10 Sep 2001 00:09:28

When I 'preview in browser' this page looks fine, but in 'preview' and when
surfing to it normally the text of the article doesn't show and several
entries on the right side panel are no longer there. I've redone the link to
the page, resaved it, cleared my cache, stared at the html for an hour but I
don't see what's wrong. I do have white links on the left panel but I don't
see any sign of this white formatting being applied to the center area and
this wouldn't explain the missing entries on the right side. There must be
something obvious that I'm missing.

help! disappearing text??

Post by Mark Fitzpatric » Mon, 10 Sep 2001 01:09:53

Edna,
The text is still there in the document, there is just something
wrong with the HTML. If you look at the page then use the View Source
command to look at the HTML. I took a peak at the HTML and there are a
couple of things wrong. If you look down at the very bottom you'll see that
there are two closing div tags outside the HTML tag, these should definitely
not be there. That means that somewhere there is an unbalanced tag as they
should always be within the <body> tags. Also, I copied and pasted the HTML
into Dreamweaver because it will show broken tags and there is an unbalanced
table tag, actually an </td></tr></table> together. That means that
something before them was not closed properly. This can prevent text from
being displayed because the browser won't know where to put it. I am
guessing, but I think the problem will probably start right after the script
for the adverti*t. If something there isn't closed properly then it
could throw your entire page out. You might try commenting out the script in
case that you are getting malformed results from it.

        Hope this helps,

help! disappearing text??

When that happens to me I have no patience to try to correct the code.
(Indicating a definite lack of html knowledge...Guilty!)
I find it much faster to copy and paste the text and images into a new template.
I have no shame...

John,
I'm definitely with you there!! Searching through several hundred
lines of HTML for one unbalanced or missing tag is not my idea of fun. Even
with HTML knowledge it's a definite pain. Your way is much easier.

Most of your problems are in ~ line 100
Where you are missing a closing </iframe> and a closing </noscript> tag

Thanks guys. I didn't see any tags outside of the html and body tags.
Problem was with line 100. My cheat is to place all those affiliate links
and other repetitive stuff on a hidden page and then copy paste into the
various pages from there. I must have overdone moving things around in
normal view and messed up the tags in the process.

1. MVP help! disappearing text

This is the strangest thing I've ever seen. Can only explain what
happened with reference to my still-experimental page at
http://www.lifetimelearners.org/fall_99_courses.htm.
At the top there is a table of courses. One (Accidental Art)is
hyperlinked to a bookmarked course description in the 42 descriptions
below. Note that each course description has one or more paragraphs
about the course, then a paragraph about the facilitator(the Accidental
Art facilitator is Carol Cole.)Then a line about dates and times.
I just opened this page in FP2K to insert all 42 bookmarks and create
the hyperlinks. When I did a few of those, most of the facilitator
paragraphs disappeared! No more mention of Carol Cole, nothing about
class times. Same with most of the other facilitator paragraphs, though
not all. I'm totally baffled. The disappearances are not arbitrary,
they are systematically crazy! Does anyone have a clue?
Possible clues:
The table had been brought from Excel into Word with paste special,
then saved in Word as html, then imported into FP2K.
The course-description page started as a Word doc that was sent to me.
I saved it as html, imported it into FP2K.
