Differences between "Open File" and "World Wide Web Link"?

Post by Ron Andrew » Tue, 01 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Does anyone know if there are any differences between using the "WWW
Link" (using a base URL, ie., absolute addressing) method or the "Open
File" (no base URL, ie., relative addressing) methods of creating links
in a PDF to HTML pages, such as with security issues, or performance?

The only difference I've heard of is that linking from one PDF to
another PDF should be done using the "WWW Link method", since it is
faster (are there other reasons if this is true?). The "Open File"
method is OK either when linking PDF to PDF, or the more common PDF to HTML.

I'm pretty hazy on when and why to use either of these, so appreciate
any help.
Thanks!

Ron

Links between PDF files should use NEITHER of these. You should always
use GO TO VIEW links between PDF files.

thanks. I didn't know that. Still learning I guess. Thanks.

For anyone else, then, so no one has heard or knows of any major
differences in performance or security (for example) between the WWW
Link and Open File methods?

I have decided for a current client to use only the relative Open File
method. It has the added benefit of making maintenance easier later,
allowing me to move/copy whole directory structures around, as long as I
keep the package of PDFs and their links together. I can then put them
on CDs, my local machine, etc. and all the links will function just fine.

Thanks for any more info on this.
