Please help!

in the world-menu of FS98 when I klick on "go to Airport", I see the
airports which are loaded in the original and in the addon-sceneries
all over the world and when I fly, I also have all airports and all
navaids!

BUT:

When I go to the "Airport / Facility Directory", the program
finds no airport nor navaid in any part of the worldmap!

A complete new-installation of FS98 (in the same Directoty)has had
the same result.

Can you help me? Did I apparently  erase a database, which can
not be restored by a New-Installation?

I'm sorry, evidently MSNEWS doesn't accept attachments here it is here:

DDT

There are supposed to be a total of 16 Airfield BGL files in the cache
directory, for example:

[YOUR FS98 DIRECTORY]\Cache\Africach\Scenery\Afrafd.bgl  (for Africa).

There is this one, and 15 others for all of the Cache directory, the
exceptions being Las Vegas and Antarctica.  They're all suffixed with "afd"
and have an extention of "BGL".  There are copies of these files
for each area in the booster directory of the CDROM.  They must be copied to
the Scenery directory as shown above.  These are what FS98 uses to build the
database.  I suspect that you only have these files in the US cache
directories.  I would check these directories also, just in case.

Also the bstinfo files MUST exist for the Cache to work properly.  If you
have any missing then that portion of the scenery will not work; and you
would have to copy them from the Booster folder as well...

Hi Franz,

DDT already sent a response to your question, please do check the items
he's mentioning and if his advises still didn't solve your problem, don't
hesitate to call again and I'll follow up from there, OK?

How silly of me!  I had an option turned off that didn't allow me to see
whether or not an attachment exists!  Not only could I not see my own
attachment, but other attachments as well.  You were right, that attachment
is quite popular now.  Thanks for telling me.

Hi DDT, here's my report:

first of all: for the flights I don't need the CDROM because the sceneries
of all countries are installed on my hard-drive! Therefore my
CACHE-directory
was empty!

Nevertheless following your advice, I have generated all the country-
directories together with their scenery-directories in the cache-directory
and then copied the "afd.bgl"-files into these directories (they exist twice
now, first in the main-scenery-directory and second in the
cache-directories).

Then I started the FS and generated a new database with "World,
Files,OK,OK"and so on but the result was the same as before: the text-
fields of Airports and navaids stay empty.

Furthermore, I added one of these "afd"-files with "World, Files, Add,
and with exact path-information but this also was of no use.

What now?

But please don't forget, the FS recognises all his airports, because in menu
"Go To" they exist!

Hello Dennis,

you really have made me happy because your advice was
exactly right!

After copying the original World.vis from CD I had the navaids
and after restoring my World.vis I also had the airports again!
But I ask myself: what has this procedure changed and what
was the difference compared to my previous New-Installation?
But nevertheless, the fault is eliminated and that's because of
your help and efforts!

Another difference I have found when comparing the files is:
On the CD-ROM-Scenery I found the "Facility.bgl"-file but did
not find it at all in my FS98-partition! Do I need it and should
I copy it to any of my directories?

Best regards and again many thanks

Franz

I'm glad the problem has cleared!  Although I'm not quite sure how it
cleared, because the World.vis file you had backed-up didn't change.  And
none of your files changed except for the facility.bgl file.  That file, I
believe, is a remnant from FS ver 5, and contains airport data, most of
which are in those AFD BGL files we've discussed before.  It wasn't on my
Hard Disk either.  So I would say it is optional.  There are a few airports
in it that are no where else, so if you want, leave it in the main Scenery
folder.  Any duplication airports shouldn't appear.

Perhaps another bgl file was missing before that caused the problem, and is
now there.  Hard to say.

Your World.vis file is fine.  I don't see a problem with it.

Good Luck and Good Simming
