Problems with Patch set 1.o and NT4.0

Problems with Patch set 1.o and NT4.0

Post by Colin Reeve » Tue, 24 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I am having pronlems with this update and NT4.0. As soon as I install
the patch, I lose all my Remote Access Server devices and therefore
cannot access my modem at all. The only way to remedy this is to enter
Windows NT Setup and perform a repair on my NT installation. (and then
reapply service pack 3).

Once this is complete I enter Flight simulator (98) and cannot access
anything under the world menu. (the drop down appears and I can click an
option, but it just returns to Flight Simulator with no effect.

This is a really frustrating problem as the only way to restore the
menus is to reload FS98, hence removing the update meaning many add-ons
won't function.

I would be very grateful if any could shed any light on this situation.

Thanks in advance.

Problems with Patch set 1.o and NT4.0

Welcome to the club! Misery loves company <G>.

I did the same thing Saturday night.  I installed FS98 to check out some a/c
as I was in the middle of a flight on my Win98 machine.  The next morning
when I rebooted I couldn't get RAS.

I searched Dejanews and there was a thread on this there but no cause or
real cure was found.  Tonight I'm going to remove and reinstall RAS.  If
that doesn't work I'll reinstall NT 4.0 via the upgrade method (just upgrade
what I have).

I'll let you know what happens.  Thank goodness for weekly backups.

Problems with Patch set 1.o and NT4.0

Hi Brett and Colin,

You need to go to http://www.microsoft.com/games/fsim/downloads.htm and
grab the copy of the converter that was posted on Dec 2 1997 that fixes the
problem with NT RAS.  There are also instructions there to fix an NT system
that has already been toasted by the old version of the converter.

Arrrgggg!  To late now - oh well, I needed to upgrade to NT/E anyway and do
a housecleaning <G>.  I plain forgot about that patch.

1. Patch set 1 - solution to view problem

After installing the latest patch set from MS, I had the same problems with the scenery taking a
second or two to kick in when switching views.  However, the fix on my system was very simple.  I
noticed that the display hardware setting had reset itself to 640x480x8, Primary display driver.
Whether or not those were actually the settings being used is debatable, because the frame rate
and overall display quality looked fine (apart from the view problems already mentioned).  Anyway,
resetting the hardware to my standard 3Dfx at 800x600x16 fixed the problem for me - hopefully it
will work for you as well.
