So why would I want to subscribe to *another* robot wars mailing
list?  What's wrong with the one we have, except for the low traffic?
Come on!  Use existing resources, or we will end up with a new
duplicate list everytime some enthusiast gets an itch.  It's bad
enough that the splinter group BotZ decided to build their own
list...

It appears that no one wants to use alt.robotwars either... I think that
using newsgroups is the best idea, as the messages are threaded, and they
don't get sent to your mailbox.  I don't get why people don't consolidate
all these useless lists to alt.robotwars

wait a minute.... i just checked Deja News..  they have hundreds of
postings... I must contact my sys admin about this...

I've proposed this many times, and in about 4 weeks I plan to start
on an RFD for the creation of CRR.

BTW, the results of the survey I posted a while ago got a massive
response for creating the new group, so I belive that there's
a good chance that the CFV stage will be reached and that the
creation will succed.

I'm really busy now, but in a few weeks, I'll have enough free time
to start working on the RFD.

I am NOT going to bother talking to the sys admin here about this..
alt.robotwars is a sham.  It is just a bunch of people talking about the
UK television series.  It's not worth reading. No technical information or
anything really remotely interesting.

Why didn't they make a newsgroup:

        comp.robotics.robotwars

Which would ensure that *some* technical aspects would be left.
I am dissolusioned with USENET.

It may well be because the response from Mentorn is not very encouraging to
say the least.
and using 'RobotWars' is a breach of copyright, (not so as you would notice
when reading the splinter group messages !)    What really p***ses me off
(and I am not one for profanity) is investing time, money and not a few
brain cells in a project which (as far as Mentorn seem concerned) is doomed
from the start. Surely if they want good TV they need to encourage entries
then sort out the wheat from the chaff by submission of photographs,
videos, Working drawings etc.
I think the spawning of splinter groups is a direct result of the rather
laid back attitude of C21 AKA Mentorn apparent to those of use who sent off
for details by phone or post and recieved not a*y bird in return !  I
really want to enter but so far things are not looking good....... no entry
forms !

I don't mind the BotZ group... I encourage it, since it gives me hope
for a competition if the US RW goes *-side-up.  Though I would
prefer to see their mailings on the RobotWars list... one list is
plenty for me!

As for the robotwars newsgroup, my ISP says they hooked it up, but no
sign yet.  If it is just Mentorn chatter, probably just as well.

I *know* there are plenty of US players... heck, ours came first  ;-}
But they've been terribly quiet lately.  Of course, I haven't had much
to say myself, so I'm just as guilty as the rest!

Uh.. I got my membership offer... sent that away and got an application
form... sent that away and Mentorn just phoned me tonight to clarify some
details and to say that they have sent me some more stuff... Besides, I'd go
for BotZ '99 if I were you... It seems much better, but I've already gone a
long way with Mentorn...  BTW if Huw (you know who you are) is reading this
then please give me a ring. Try phoning the top Mentorn authority Mary-Jane
on 0171 287 4545 or fax 0171 287 3728.  She's the Assistant Producer, so she
carries a lot of authority... Or you could just e-mail

other hand if you are interested in BotZ '99 then e-mail

OK - so alt.robotwars has got off to a slow start - only 1.5 wks online so
far ... and, the postings about the TV series are not as interesting as they
might be - however, if it is going to become more interesting - we need
intelligent posts from people wishing to discuss the more technical side of
RW - not that we can't indulge in lighter discussion as well.  If we all
persist, then we can make alt.robotwars work.

David Hall

BTW.  A newsgroup is only as good as the people that post to it - but
alt.robotwars can hardly be called a 'sham'

1. Robot Wars robot 4 sale

Hello All,

I'm selling my robot, the Defiant. We won the lightweight faceoff and
melee competitions at Robot Wars 1997. I was planning to enter again in
1998, but my wife and I are fortunate enough to have our first baby on
the way (due in August).

The robot comes complete with everything, including battle damage from
RW 97. Price is $2000.00, which is the approximate cost of parts and

You can see some pictures of the Defiant at Andrew Lindsey's EXCELLENT
Robot Wars archive: http://www.cybercomm.net/~alindsey/rw97/light.html
