Anyone made a 'ligther than air' flying robot?

Hey,

I have started in this sirection already, beware insanity lies this way
... I had thought it to be easy but to get aerodynamics that will allow
flight in open air requires more power than can be lifted ( at least with
electric ).  I would be happy to share thoughts relating to making these
work as for flight time they will be great !

Anyone made a 'ligther than air' flying robot?

Post by Mike Red » Tue, 31 Oct 1995 04:00:00

I'd like to make a flying robot, but electric helecopter models only fly
for 5-10 minutes and cost 200 to 500 british pounds. Has anyone out there
made airships for robot control?

1. Anyone made a 'lighter than air' flying robot?

Aerospace Engineering at UofT made up a RC blimp (to dazzle the undergrads),
a few points from seeing it fly.

-you dont want it "lighter than air"...keep it just below neutral-buoyant.
You need to expend (minimal) power to keep it up, but there is no chance
of it running away if a control link (or the batteries) fail.

-the gas bag is a sail.  outdoors just isn't viable and even gentle
air conditioning pushed it around.  Response time is also pretty
low....of course this was laid out like a regular blimp (twin fans
hanging off a suspended pod)  putting a wire cage around the bag and
hanging the motors off that might help (push the bag, instead of drag
it around)...but there goes the weight

-for a reasonable payload, you need a pretty large bag, and the
gas needs to be topped up fairly often

   (the obvious one)
-for the gas, use helium, unless your into the dramatic :)

  my two cents...
