1. recv doesn't return when nothing to recv?

Perhaps this is a strange question.  I'm writting an APP that uses recv and
send.  However when I call recv when there is nothing being sent it just
waits until something is sent and takes the control of the thread.  Is there
a way to tell if there is anything coming in without using recv. I've tried
MSG_PEEK but same result it just waits.
