Hi,

I have the Waite Group Windows API Bible dated 1992 which is said
to support Windows 3.1.
Well, It does support the main new stuff of win31 , but not the multimedia
extensions (like sound, video , etc...), or the CommDlg library.
Part of that is , I think, because it was developed with the beta version
of Win31 which didn't have all features..

Other than that, It is a good reference with useful tips and good coverage
of things. Too bad there is no disk for the source , though.

Bye,
Ran Yaniv.

When I upgraded to Turbo Pascal for Windows 1.5, I asked Borland why there
was no multimedia API documentation.  The reason apparently is as above;
apparently, the multimedia stuff are still extensions to Windows.  They are
not officially part of the Windows API.  This strikes me as being sensible.
If it were officially part of the API, this would imply that a computer
would not be 'Windows compatible' unless it had sound/CD hardware.  Making
multimedia an extension means that programmers avoid writing stuff in their
programs that won't run on all hardware.

Yes....  The Windows API Bible was the only one that we could find on Windows
programming that really was a real help to our project.

We spent at least 6 hours in a technical bookstore looking for a good Windows
programming book and found that all the others basically gave the same information
that the MS-Windows SDK manuals did.  The API Bible was able to give us enough
info to start us on our way.  It had good examples (something that a lot of
people need to get a good understanding of Windows programming)

I regard the best API reference as being the "official" one - the
"Programmer's Reference" SDK manuals.  This is in 4 parts as follows:

Vol 1:  Overview
Vol 2:  Functions
Vol 3:  Messages, Structures, and Macros
Vol 4:  Resources

Of these, volumes 2 and 3 are the main ones.  Vol 1 is useful to find out
HOW the functions are used, and Vol 4 contains such things as file format
information.  All these manuals are published as books by Microsoft Press.
Of course, if you buy a Microsoft compiler such as VC++ you get them all
(and a lot more) included.

The Waite Group book is one of the most highly researched computer
references I have ever seen. There are short example code fragments
for virtually every API function!

Contrast this to the now all-to-frequent laziness of cropping *.h
file chunks as "references" for function calls. (eg: Barkakati C/C++7)

1. Windows API Reference Book needed

Greetings,

I am after a reference book that contains as much of Windows95/98 API as
possible. I have been unable to find such a book for windows programming,
as the ones I have found cover VC++ or Borland C Builder, etc.

If anyone could provide with a title, author, etc, that would be great.

Thanks in advance.
