Samba and long file names under Win95

Post by David Connell » Tue, 25 Apr 1995 04:00:00

Does anyone know what the scoop is with Samba and long file names under Win95?
I notice that the Win95 Explorer can see long file names on mounted Samba
drives, but the long file names are not visible from the MS-DOS command prompt.
This is unfortunate if using command line tools such as CL and NMAKE which
need to handle sources with long file names. I've also noticed this behavior
using the Microsoft Lan Manager for UNIX product from Unipress Software. Is
there some undocumented settings file option which can enable access to long
file names from a command prompt?

As far as I know it impossible to access long filenames at a command prompt. All
long filename will be named 8.3 for compatibility reasons.

You will find that with Samba 1.9.13alpha10 and above you will see
dual names at the dos prompt under Win95. Wait for 1.9.13 to come out
of if don't feel daring enough to try an alpha release.

It turned out that there is an undocumented bit in the trans2 qfsinfo
call that needs to be set for Win95 to know that dual names are
possible. Maybe Unipress have the same specs that I do, that don't
show this bit :-)

This is supposed to be fixed in 1.9.13.

Simon.

Oops, I should have said the file/dir name pointed to when the new
int 21 interface is called can be long and include spaces.

Absolutly FALSE!  All the new microsoft tools (dir, copy md, etc. etc)
handle long file names, even those with spaces.

There is a new int 21 interface that looks just like the current
(pre dos 7.0) file and dir handling functions.  The only real
difference is that the pointer to the file/dir name can be long.
