Hi.  I am reading Using Samba by Eckstein, Collier-Brown, and Kelly ("The gospel") and am confused
by table 1-3 on page 16.

I look at:

truk!jeffs 18 > nmblookup -M -S -R -
querying __MSBROWSE__ on 128.95.205.255
128.95.205.91 __MSBROWSE__<01>
Looking up status of 128.95.205.91
received 8 names
        AHAB            <00> -         B <ACTIVE>
        AHAB            <20> -         B <ACTIVE>
        UWEERCS         <00> - <GROUP> B <ACTIVE>
        UWEERCS         <1e> - <GROUP> B <ACTIVE>
        AHAB            <03> -         B <ACTIVE>
        DOUGH           <03> -         B <ACTIVE>
        UWEERCS         <1d> -         B <ACTIVE>
        ..__MSBROWSE__. <01> - <GROUP> B <ACTIVE>
num_good_sends=0 num_good_receives=0

truk!jeffs 19 >

What does Hex byte value 03 mean?  I know that AHAB is the master browser - it's also one of two W2K
machines on the network. Also:

truk!jeffs 23 > nmblookup -M -T -
querying __MSBROWSE__ on 128.95.205.255
ahab.ee.washington.edu, 128.95.205.91 __MSBROWSE__<01>
truk!jeffs 24 >

But why is UWEERCS the type 1d and not AHAB?

That's ok, religion is hard (;-))

I reccomend you not go there, it's complex
and not necessary to get things to work...
        most of the time.

If you're forced to, the hex bytes are documented at
