3 Samba Servers 3 workstations weirdness

Post by Mark Thoma » Tue, 19 Sep 2000 04:00:00

If anyone has any ideas what is going on here, I sure would appreciate it.
I am new to Samba, and could use a few pointers.  I have one PC that likes
all three Samba servers, and two PC's that only like one of the three.

I have 3 Samba Servers running FreeBSD 4.0.
NS1 Samba 2.0.7
NS2 Samba 2.0.6
NS3 Samba 2.0.7

Workstations
Mct450    Win98
Net450    Win98
Gl575       Win95

NS1 and NS3 are configured exactly alike.  Same installation procedures,
etc.
NS1, 2, and 3 are all configured with the same smb.conf

The Windows 95 workstation works everytime connecting to all 3 servers.
The Windows 98 workstations work only with NS1, NS2 and 3 says share not
found, although they all three show up under the workgroup in Network
neighborhood.
The workgroups on all machines are set to ITGDOM1.
Mct450 and Gl575 have the Client32 for netware and MS client for MS
networks.
Net450 has MS client for MS networks, and MS client for Netware Networks.
I have tried turning off and on the Domain login, the registry patch for
clear text passwords, and cache handling. Reinstalling Samba on NS3.  Inetd
and rc.d startup options.  All machines are logging as the same person, and
that person exists in the Unix passwd file and the smbpasswd.
The smbd and nmbd daemons are running on all three servers.
testparm and smbstatus, reports no errors.
----------------------------------------------------
The NS1 server appears to be the Master, even though all smb.conf files are
the same.
This network used to have an NT4.0 server with, Wins, DNS, DHCP, etc.. PDC.
It is now off of the network.  I'm on a cable modem and had to give up the
IP address to run a FreeBSD box.  I have not made any changes to the
smb.conf since I removed the NT Server box.  I did not have it specified in
Samba, because I knew I would be removing it later.

I get some errors in log.nmb on each of the servers.  Same errors for each
of the machines that try to connect with NS1, NS2, and NS3.
I do not have any workstaion logs for some reason.  I read a post that says
to change the /var/log/samba/log.%m to /var/log/samb/%M.  I'm going to also
try this.

1. Server can ping workstation, Workstation cannot ping server

I receive the error message: No Domain Server Found.... when I try too
log in.

As stated above my server can ping the Win95b workstation but the
workstation cannot ping server.

I have tcp/ip loaded and when I run winipcfg I can release and renew my
ip information from the same server that I cannot ping.  Does anybody
know what I can do to correct the problem?

Thanks
Steve
