Slow Samba with Win XP but ftp ist fast...

Post by Arne » Sat, 07 Jun 2003 23:47:28

Hi,

i have am Samba 2.2.7 running as PDC in a windows XP environment. The
connection via smb is terribly slow. (Server: Suse Linux 8.1, 2.4GHz
Xeon with a 50GB SCSI-Raid, Network 10Base2 Ethernet)

for example: via ftp it takes 15 seconds to transfer a 13MB file, via
smb ist takes 4 to seven minutes for the same file. Somnetimes the
speed is so slow, that the roaming profiles cant be loaded.

Does anyone know what i can do to solve this problem?

Thanks for your help,

Arne

Most of the times you will find "oplock break failure" entries in your
logfiles (suggest you take a look there), caused by misconfigured network
connections (maybe false speed/duplex auto negotiation across a hub). Ftp
isn't that picky, because of much less overhead traffic in reverse
direction. Often just exchanging a hub against a switch helps, or disable
auto negotiation for all your client NICs and set them to half duplex.
Make sure network terminations are set accordingly.
