Most of the times you will find "oplock break failure" entries in your
logfiles (suggest you take a look there), caused by misconfigured network
connections (maybe false speed/duplex auto negotiation across a hub). Ftp
isn't that picky, because of much less overhead traffic in reverse
direction. Often just exchanging a hub against a switch helps, or disable
auto negotiation for all your client NICs and set them to half duplex.
Make sure network terminations are set accordingly.
