Wanted - Quasitron (sp ?) by Hewson ?

Post by D.J.Churchi.. » Mon, 31 Jan 1994 07:55:44

Greetings fellow Sinclair *s.

Does anyone have or know where I can get hold of a snapshot of
Quasitron (I think that's how it's spelt) by Hewson (I think).  It was
a 3D isometric game where you battled to become supreme droid.  There
were loads of different ranks of droid and you had to grapple with them
to gain their circuits.  Have I jogged your memory ?  Can you upload
it to ftp.ijs.si ?  Or uuencode it and send via e-mail ?

Or how about a copy of Bobby Bearing ?

Thanks for your time,

Dazza.

Both Bobby Bearing and Quazitron are available at ftp.ijs.si

Ok, this one is by Hewson, correct - it's the forerunner to Paradroid 90,
which was a far inferior game, I thought.

It was by the same bloke who did Ranarama - and was a similar format.

It was also just as annoying in that you thought you finished the entire
game and then it basically started again, just calling the world something
different....

Ummm... as to the snap... if no-one else uploads it, I have a copy in Sam
Coupe Samtape format, which I could probably convert to .sna given enough
time... ask again in a week and I'll work on it :)

Good game though

Geoff

This sounds very much like Paradroid, was it called this Quasitron on the
spectrum? Paradroid 2000 recently came out on the 16 bits then an even better
version on the Archimedes. Andrew Braybrook was the chappie who programmed it.

Paradroid was in 2d, Quazatron was in 3d. Far better game, aswell.

Only problem was when it took so damn long to flip around the play area.

No.  Paradroid was indeed written for the C64 by Andrew Braybrook.
Quazatron (correct spelling) was a sort of follow up to Paradroid which, as far as
I'm aware, only appeared on the Speccy.  It's a 3d isometric game as opposed to Paradroid's
overhead view.
The aim of the game is to destroy all the droids on each of the levels of the city,
this can either be achieved by shooting them, or by grappling with them.  This invokes a
puzzle type game which when won allows access to the defeated droid's parts.  So you
basically go around grappling higher and higher level droids and nicking their equipment.

Get hold of the disruptor.  Serious firepower.  Bit of drain on the old power unit though.

Was there a sequel called 'Magnetron'? I can't remember the details, but
I remember that it was mentioned.

Never heard of it myself...

Getting back to the original subject: does anyone have this in snapshot? I
have an original and that original snapped in Samtape 2 format (uncompressed,
but I don't know the format of samtape...). If no-one posts in the next
couple of days, I'll start trying to disassemble Samtape and work on it...

And it *is* nice to be back posting... I had to download the newsreader
source *and* the nntp source before I could do it... but it's there...

Nope -- it was Paradroid (or the much more impressive Paradroid 90... anyone
fancy converting it to SAM??? :-) )

Well I would... except for the fact that it's shite boring...

I might think about doing Quazatron though -- a far better game.

Bzzzzt... no, Paradroid was the original C64 (ack!) game that was the
inspiration for the much more superior (IMHO) Quazatron. Magnetron was the
sequel to Quazatron and involved juggling magnetic charges instead of
electric currents in its version of the "grapple game". Otherwise, it was
much the same as its predecessor. Paradroid 90 was an update of the original
Paradroid for the 16-bit machines and had nothing to do with Quazatron at all.
It's like this:

  1985          PARADROID (C64 only)
                    |
  1986              |---------------------- Quazatron (Spec only)
                    |                           |
  1988              |                       Magnetron (Spec only)
                    |
                    |
  1990          Paradroid 90 (Amiga & ST)

I hope that's cleared that one up... :)

Bzzzzt!! (:-)

Also Archimedes. Just thought I'd clear that one up... :)

Paradroid 2000 was (I think) an update of the update of the original Paradroid
for the 32-bit machines. And very nice it was too, by all accounts.

Just for the record, you can add:

                    |
1993         Paradroid 2000 (Acorn Arch. only)

Never played '90, but I'm hooked on '2000 - I was hooked on the C64 original,
but had to play it on a friends machine until I could get Quazatron for my
specy - It was good but (IMHO) a little too slow. Never played Magnatron though,
is there a snap around anywhere ?
