New copper/fiber testers

New copper/fiber testers

I just called Wavetek to get my CAT5 tester calibrated and was talking
to one their tech support guys about new products.  He said they have a
new OTDR about to ship. It's modular with MM and SM modules, color disp,
floppy, hard disk, printer port, ect...  Also they'll have a new series
of cable testers in January for CAT5 and up.  Owners of the Lantek PROs
can trade in towards their new LT8155.  I wish Fluke would have let me
trade in my DSP100 for their DSP2000, no such luck.  If you're
interested you can call them at 800-854-2708.  Sounds like pretty cool
stuff...

I would like to bring the following to Darcy's attention:
1) The major difference between a DSP-100 and DSP-2000 are a much
brighter display and the automated fault diagnostic.
2) The DSP-100 and DSP-2000 both measure the same things: attenuation,
NEXT, length, propagation delay, delay skew AND return loss.
3) The Single Test mode of the DSP-100 provides access to all
diagnostic capabilities. Only the DSP-2000 does invoke the right
diagnostic test directly and you therefore do not have to think
about how to troubleshoot a link. We are still challenging our
competition to accuracy measure the Channel configuration (which
carries your data - the DSP-100 is still the only cable tester
independently certified to meet all requirements of TIA TSB-67
for the channel configuration; everybody is certified to meet
the same requirements only for the test (basic link) configuration)
and to accurately determine the location of a NEXT fault.
(Opens and shorts are no problem for anybody, we all use the TDR
function.) Please note that when you exchange the test cord
for your own user patch cord, the NEXT will change up to 2 dB for
a nominally compliant link due to the mating of a different plug
and jack of your horizontal link .....
4) A software upgrade for the DSP-100 includes all the other things
like Power Sum NEXT, prorated attenuation for zoned cabling, etc.
So you really do not lose out on very basic measurement capability.
This software update is available real inexpensive: No charge!

We nevertheless note your disappointment and maybe our marketing
folks have to reconsider. (I am just an engineer very familiar
with the capabilities of both instruments). I am sure that in the
future there will be new product offerings. At this time I feel very
confident about the performance of both the DSP-100 and DSP-2000
relative to what is offered by the competition. Do not hesitate to
learn what is offered. I hope you will not get confused by
irrelevant and misleading claims ... Of course we can be accused
of doing the same thing ...

I can just say: we have UL certification, which we believe is most
rigid in meeting requirements, and we have statements of all the
major cabling suppliers that indicate approval of our cablemeters
to certify the performance of their networks.

I hope you do not feel treated unfairly after this explanation.

1. New telephone line - need new copper

Somewhere, I remember reading about how to make sure that the phone
company ran a new copper wire to one's house.  Something about asking
for a certain service (which will essentually require new copper), and
cancel the service after one month.  I don't remember what that
service was.

I live in an old part of downtown, and I have had bad experience with
the existing copper up in the poles.  If it isn't the rain, it's the
squirrels <g>. I'm going to bring in a new line (either to shair with,
or dedicate to) for a DLS line, and I really want new copper.

Anyone remember the service to ask for?

Thanks in advance.
