Posted to comp.dcom.modems.cable and mailed to Mediaone Customer Care.

"Customer Care",

I know you are real busy looking into the current situation with the
system performance.......ha!  Yeah that one cracked me up as well.  But
that was the only thing I could think of, since you are not answering
emails.  Anyway, what is rmpxy01.ce.mediaone.net and why is it trying
to contact my PC?

As of now, ZoneAlarm reports 106 attempts by rmpxy01.ce.mediaone.net
since 7:05 this evening (it is now 8:33).

I'm still not sure what those are, or why they were there.  That has
never happened before.

If you're browsing web sites by name (not IP address), you're
making DNS queries of your assigned DNS servers.  What IP
addresses do you have for your DNS servers?  I've got
24.131.128.11 and 24.131.128.12.

24.131.128.12 has been unreliable lately, like unavailable.
About as long as the mail servers have been having problems.  It
is probably related to the mail problems.  I hope the first DNS

network for DNS resolution then.  Maybe they are messing around
with the network again and you've got the IP address for
rmpxy01.ce.mediaone.net as one of your DNS servers?  It is
running DNS so it is possible that you were recently configured
by DHCP to query that machine for the IP addresses of servers
you're trying to reach by name.

I do not have _anything_ in my DNS Configuration.  Those
rmpxy01.ce.mediaone.net connection attempts finally ended, at about 120
or so attempts.  Weird thing was, some of them took place when I was
flying Microsoft Flight Sim 98, which does not call home or anything.
Before that, last time I used the internet, was when I logged into the
weather.noaa.gov website and downloaded the latest METAR (weather
updates) so that I could plug them into FS98 and get real world weather
conditions, and I did not see any attempts by that server at all.

The same thing that is happening to you happened to me about 2 months ago.
What was happening was by DNS servers were trying to connect to my computer
thinking it was a DNS server!!!! I had over 300 attempts of trying dynamic
connects to port 53 with UDP
packets in a 45 minute period before I was fianlly disconnected. It got so
bad I couldn't stay online for more than 10 minutes sometimes before being
dissconnected! The next day the problem went away when I guess they fixed
the problem.

When you run winipcfg.exe, what addresses are assigned to your
machine for DNS?

24.131.129.71 = rmpxy01.ce.mediaone.net

That's your primary DNS server assigned by DHCP.  I don't know
what software you were running on your machine that was asking
for Domain Name Resolution at the time you got the report but it
appears to be a legitimate response to a request by your machine.

I dunno.  Sounds good to me, as MediaNone never got back to me with my
question about this.

It may be running a proxy but it is also configured to be his
primary DNS lookup server.  It is running DNS.  A simple lookup
verifies this.  As does the type of traffic that was captured.

1. Am I hacked? Am I at least safe?

Hi.  I got a cable modem last month, and after reading many articles about
security I installed ZoneAlarm.  I have my File and Print sharing off, and
ZoneAlarm set to it's high security setting.  Well, I've noticed a lot of
alerts...All from address 208.184.17t2.xxx:1975 o many of my ports.  I tried
Sam Spade, but I'm not much in the know when it comes to this stuff.  I
think there were entries for bogus rDNS under the addresses I'm suspecting.
Well, I did a netstat in dos, and I saw the same addresses...mostly with
TIME_WAIT, but occasionally a connection was ESTABLISHED or SYN_SENT
(whatever that means).

So, I would like to know:

1.  Am I being hacked?  Attempted?
2.  Who is this 208.184.172.xxx that's contacting my computer?
3.  If I am being targeted, with the setup I have, how safe am I?  And if
so, Any other common (cheap) precautions?

Thanks, Mark Moreau.

2. Does sendmail 8.6 support IDA_like "generics"?

3. I am a dumbass (No, I am)

4. VME Interrupts and MV1603 and VxWorks 5.3

5. Problem posting via nntp.ce.mediaone.net?

6. please let me know how they sounds
