AUI to AUI (without Transceiver) how?

Post by Aki Linde » Tue, 16 Apr 1996 04:00:00

Is there any way to connect just two repeaters or hub directly from
AUI to AUI without using TRANSCEIVERS. It's should be but who
could tell the pin order.

I've never heard of anyone doing it, but it seems possible.  One thing
you definitely don't want to do is connect the power leads together.
That could do some serious damage to one or both of the machines.

AUI to AUI (without Transceiver) how?

yes and no....

here are the db15 AUI or DIX pins

1 logic ref
2 collision +
3 Tx +
4 logic ref
5 Rx +
6 Power Return (for the txcvr)
7 n/c
8 logic ref
9 collision -
10 Tx -
11 logic ref
12 Rx -
13 Power (for the txcvr)
14 logic ref
15 n/c

I know I have done it before.... I know in certain situations it works
and depends on what kind of equipment and how they are all connected
to weather you can get away with it.

Anyhow make like a null modem concept cable.... just leave off the 6 and 13 since
there is not an external tranciever to be powered.... don't remember about the
collision pins, though.... I think I had to experiment before I got it right.

3 --- 5
5 --- 3
10 --- 12
12 --- 10

for criss-crossing the tx and rx (+ & -) pins

hope this gets you started..... maybe someone else knows for sure.

Aki:

Doesn't a transceiver detect collisions for the AUI?
Without transceivers, how will you flow control the link?
