Running a SLIP or PPP connection over a serial cable (Win95 to Linux)

Post by K.N.Fras » Sun, 15 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I've got two PC's one is a Linux box the other Windows 95 and I'm
connecting them with a serial cable.

I've got the Win95 machine to log onto the Linux box as a dumb
terminal to prove the link works.

I now want to get the two talking TCP/IP over the cable.
Problem : Win95 only wants to connect using a modem or a network
card/device.
I think I need to install a device driver that lets Win95 use COM2 but
not as a modem and then bind it to TCP/IP as normal, but I can't find
one.

Has anyone else managed this or am I going to have to put my hand in
my pocket for two net cards? :)

Thanks in advance

Ken

I believe I might have such a beastie. Someone sent it to me last year when
I was contemplating similar things, but I never got around to using it, or
even testing it out.

Drop me a line if you want to be a guinea-pig, and I'll forward it via
email.

Try a driver called nullmodem.inf. You can found the details at
http://www.vt.edu:10021/K/kewells/net.
It works as a NT Direct Connection over a null modem cable. It seems to
work properly.

                        Luck!

1. win95-linux serial cable connection blues

hi there,

i am trying to get a win95 laptop to connect to linux RH6 via serial
cable over dialup connection using ppp but for some frustrating reason
it is not working.

on invoking dialup connection i can see the linux login screen, login
with the user account with pppd as shell and .ppprc as per howto,i get
veryfying user name and pasword and then disconnected from the
computer(remote modem hung up as per win95 modem log file below).

both pcs have a win95 partition and i tested serial connection via
hyperterm.setup ports in control panel to 19200,8n1,hardware flow
cntrl.i can send characters from both pcs but file transfers using
zmodem fail.

i couldnt get dcc to work either.
is the fact that hyperterm sends text but doesnt do file transfer
indicative of a wrong cable or a setting somewhere?

thanks,
sam
