It is a DVD-ROM. That is what allows you to play DVD movies on it.

Microsoft stated that all games are going to be straight
DVD rom's. Not one game is going to be CD rom. Unlike
50% off all PS2 games.

All XBox games are DVD-9 (9GB single sided, double layer)....it's an
advantage as far as space (9GB is a lot of game) and speed. (it's quicker to
read a DVD than a CD because the tracks are more tightly packed)
