Need more than two filters in Eudora 3.0

Post by Tobin Anthon » Wed, 10 Apr 1996 04:00:00

4/1 MacWeek says that Eudora Pro 3.0 will still only have two filters
with which to filter messages.  I will be a little disappointed if the
filtering capability is not significantly different than in 2.1.x.
cc:Mail allows far more filters than just two!!  I'd like to be able to
filter messages based on more than two users.  I'd like to be able to
filter messages based on date and time.  I'd like to be able to filter
mail than contains fonts or certain text.

The article states that you can do a lot more once you've filtered the
message but none of the options mentioned seemed all that compelling
(play a sound? open a dialog box??).

For really sophisticated filtering in a Mac POP client, you should look at
Z-Mail and in particular at its scripting language Z-Script. If you're
willing to write the scripts, you can filter in pretty much any reasonable
way you can think of. The core functionality of Z-Mail is essentially the
same as Eudora, give or take a few features. The interface is a bit
clunky, though. Z-Mail is a commercial product, btw. I assume you can get

heard).

Did you read the same article I did? You can have more than two filters.
Filters in 3.0 will be limited, as they are in the current Eudora Pro to
looking at two different items in the same filter (i.e. I could filter
mail from Bob that has the subject "test" to the Trash, but will be unable
to filter messages from Bob that has the subect "test" and was sent before
6am). However, I can set up as many filters as I want.

Play a sound? Open a dialog box? They gave a list of about TEN things you
can do on filtered messages (including redirecting them, one of the most
frequently desired feature in Eudora Pro) and you simply pick those two?
You can also preform up to five actions based on the filter.

I could filter a message from Bob with the subject "test" and

1. Play a sound to tell me
2. Print the message to give to the FBI
3. Redirect it back to Bob to fill his mailbox with useless junk
4. Send a prepared reply to the message asking him to stop.

AND

5. Transfer the emssage to the Trash.

I can do that for every person I know. What else do you want Eudora to do?

Yep, we're disagreeing on nomenclature.

That's not what I meant as filters.  I consider a filter to be a boolean
test on what I do with my messages.  I often need to run through more
than two boolean rules on a message.  For example, what if I want mail
from more than two people routed to a certain folder?  Sure, I can set up
a different filter/factor (whatever) for each person to have Eudora route
their messages to a folder but that seems counterproductive.  Even
cc:Mail gives you the ability to concatenate several rules in one boolean
expression.

The most common action I use is storing messages in particular folders.
I'm not impressed with any of the other actions mentioned in the article.
Forwarding, redirecting, printing, and the others all things that I
would like to do manually.

Settle down, Hank, you're getting spittle on your monitor.  ;-)

Having more than 2 tests in a filter item would be nice, but it's not the
end of the world - I just have multiple filters routing messages to the
same folder.

Being able to send automatic replies is a GREAT feature - it's nice if you
want to set up some kind of simple responder.

I'd really like to see some kind of immediate filter or a more powerful
find that I can use to do a one-time search and move the found messages to
a folder. Maybe having different sets of filters so I can set one up to
move a particular set of messages rather than modifying the only set of
filters temporarily. That kind of find/filtering is something I do very
often when I decide it's time to clean out my mailboxes & decide which
messages to save.

If you want to filter users x,y,z into one mailbox, make a nickname which
includes users x,y,z and filter on that nickname.

This has been available for quite some time now.

I usually use this approach.

I have a set of filters that processes incoming mail.

I have another set of filters on which the incoming/outgoing checkboxes
are unchecked, and manaul is checked.  These filters are those that I use
to apply to the currently selected messages when doing mail cleaning.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be nice to have new features in eudora's
filtering.  Indeed it would.  I am saying that a lot of what people are
asking for can already be done, if in a somewhat indirect way.

1. Eudora Pro 3.0 -- Filter doesn't filter

Ok. I'm a bit perplexed here, maybe someone can enlighten me as to exactly
what I'm doing wrong:

Situation:

1) Unsolicited Commercial Email coming in everyday.
2) So I set up a nickname called 'Spam' and put in the address box all the
*domains* of cyber-spam that keep coming my way, i.e. cyberpromo.com,
answerme.com, interramp.com, etc.
3) Create a filter for 'Any Header' on incoming mail and manual mail. If
<<Any Header>> intersects nickname 'Spam' it is to transfer to trash that
piece of mail.

4) I have a sample piece of email from a cyber-spam company. I try to
filter it manually. Nope, it doesn't work. If I create a single filter for
each company/domain, it will apparently work.

I test out the nickname by filling in the "To:" entry 'Spam' and watch
Eudora plunk in all the domains and bad people. So the nickname works.
Crossing the nickname with an 'intersects nickname' filter doesn't work.

So what gives?

Any idea?

thx,

Dieder
