HELP: e-mail error: host name configuration error -- Returned mail: Service unavailable

Post by Jason Gill » Tue, 28 Apr 1998 04:00:00

Every once in a while I get an error from my Mailer-Daemon with the
below error. This line makes me nervous:

<<< 553 Netra host name configuration error

but everything else seems to work fine. Has anyone seen this sort of
thing before is it something to worry about? Is it complaining about
the message to my server or the fact it can't return the message to
the other system? When I send a message to my server from another

Help?

You're supposed to send your fully qualified name in the HELO. The other
server is complaining because you haven't and it can't resolve your name
in DNS. Change your hostname or change your sendmail.cf to use the fully
qualified name.

1. Service unavailable: host name configuration error

HELP!

So every once in a while I get this error when someone sends an e-mail

error.  My server name is Netra (pop, www, ftp.)

Not every mail server does this though.  I have tried sending mail to
that address from another server I have access to but the mail from
there (a Unix box) works just fine.

Any suggestions?

Here is the error message :
