Better returned mail error messages

Has anyone added functionality to their sendmail to improve the error messages
users see? I was think that one might create a new mailer definition, say
verror. Then mail you might want to provide a more robust error message
for you would send to verror.

verror could just invoke a program that adds your exciting error message.
Often the one-liners generated by sendmail are hard to understand unless you
are a more advanced mail user.

Anyone done something similar to this? Any implications? I would think you
might have to guard against mail loops when returned mail can not be
delivered to the sender.

Thanks,
-Mike

I believe Eric added some of this capability to his latest sendmail.  At least
the capability to include a text file with the error message to say who to
follow up with.

I use IDA sendmail at the moment and do not see changing in the near future.
So I would love to know if anyone has done something utilizing standard
sendmail techniques with additional backend programs. Or is there any chance
of this getting in IDA?

Thanks!

My IDA-variant (called King James Sendmail) includes vastly greater detail
in the error reports than standard sendmail, or Eric's R6, or UIUC's IDA.
You can get a copy from gatekeeper.dec.com in /pub/misc/vixie/kjs.tar.Z.

 Three points:

  1.  Users really should not be using 'Return-Receipt-To:'.  It does not
answer the problem of concern to most users.  It is mainly
useful as a debugging tool for email administrators.  When viewed
from this point of view, returning the headers is essential.

  2.  You ask for a message body explaining what the message means.  What
it really means is:  "The message was accepted by a mailer with the
'l' (local) flag set in the mailer definition."  Is this sort of
message really going to enlighten your users?  In most cases the
user sending the message would like to know whether the recipient
has read it, not merely whether it has been deposited in a mailbox
on a machine which recipient may or may not occasionally log into.
(Note that in most setups, delivery to /dev/null will produce a
      Return-Receipt).

  3.  There is a group currently involved in discussions on the general
topic of email delivery and/or receipt notification.  The administrative

changes you make may be premature.
