does anyone know if netmeeting allows two computers in the one house
connected by cable on network neighbourhood (think that's called a lan) to
enable one user to use internet explorer and the other to share and see what
the other is viewing on the net.

p.s. there is only one phone line and we're trying to set up a system where
we can access the net at same time as well as seeing, if we want to , what
the other is doing.. confused!!!

Sure.  If you use tcp/ip protocol and set each device with a differnt ip
address, then you just put the address in netmeeting to call the other PC.

Glenn,

I use SyGate, http://www.sygate.com, to share a cable modem between three
computers. It works very well.  Now, with that said, I use NetMeeting on the
gateway computer, the one connected to the cable modem, just fine. I
conference with family all over the US. NetMeeting running on my wife's
computer downstairs can connect to a remote family conference, but will not
get video/audio back. This is because of the addresses translation going on
in my gateway machine. SyGate advertises this should work, but I have never
been able to configure the rules to make it happen. I also can not
conference, using NetMeeting, between the upstairs and downstairs. To do
that, I use "iVisit" which is "multihomed", meaning you can select which
physical network interface and assigned IP address you want to use. That
works very well for testing and just plain fooling around. The problem with
"iVisit" is you can not share applications or whiteboard.

I just downloaded a "Virtual Network Computing" package from
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/index.html, last night. It lets you
export remote displays to/from a local machine running UNIX, Windows, etc.
This could be used, and keep in mind I have not tried this yet, with
"iVisit" to share a remote application via an exported display, while you
are in a video/audio conference. It looks interesting.

Whew...long winded...Eh! Good luck...
