Wayne, the evaluation gave high marks to both the 5P and the ScanMaker III as
well as the Umax model.  What is the relationship between the ScanMaker II and
the E6 he was asking about and is also the one I bought as I heard it was
better than the H-P.

The ScanMaker III is a $1500 36 bit scanner that includes TMA, Full PhotoShop,
and the DCR color calibration master target.  The E6 is a $300 30 bit scanner
that is optionally available with PhotoShop for about $200 additional
(PhotoShop is normally $550 retail itself).

1. Microtek E6 vs HP 5P

I have been reading through this group for the past while and doing some
reading on various web pages.  I am in the market for a flatbed scanner
and as everyone knows there are a lot of choices.  The two I am currently
interested in are the E6 and HP5P.  I have read a number of posts stating
that the specs provided by the manufacturer are not always the most
important aspect.  So my question is which of these scanner is better?
The E6 is listed as 30-bit, 600x1200dpi and the HP is 24-bit, 300dpi.  The
price on the two are fairly similar.  I have had experience with other HP
scanners, but not with Microtek.  I know that the best way to find out
which is better is to test them, but there isn't a E6 in any store locally
so I would have to get it ordered in.  Any suggestions or comments would
be appreciated.
