This is not completely accurate.  I test-drove one of these boards
last year.  The upgraded machine was one of the early SS2's with slower
RAM (80 or 100ns, I forget which), and a 207 MB disk (Maxtor 215 ?).
Both had to be replaced before the upgrade board worked.

It is possible that these problems have been fixed now,
but caveat emptor.

These early problems were fixed by subsequent revisions to the board.
Of course, it's always possible to find something that *WON'T* work if you try hard enough.

There are jumpers for different memory speeds, but faster is always better.  The disk issue is
probably related to SCSI-1 vs. SCSI-2 and.or termination.  IMHO, a 200 Mb disk seems like a waste
on a SPARC 5-class machine. I know, I know... it's the principle.

Anyway, these boards do offer cost-effective solutions in many -- but not all - upgrade
scenarios.

I'd be glad to discuss individual requirements, AND we do offer other upgrade alternatives.

have been fixed in newer revs of the board.

>have been fixed in newer revs of the board.

The MicroSPARC II CPU (common to SS5, Axil's 245 and the Axilerate/255
pizzabox upgrade product) at 85mhz is only rated to use 80ns, 70ns, and 60ns
RAM, not 100ns.  The largest available wait state jumper selection is
used for 80ns, and faster ones for 70 and 60.  The 110mhz versions
only support 70 and 60ns RAM, both at the largest available wait state
jumper setting as well.  The chart doesn't say so, but the 70mhz
MicroSPARC IIs look like they'd support 100ns with the largest wait
state setting...

I've personally used and installed the Maxtor 207s (1.6" ht 3.5" ff)
on the Axilerate machines, they work fine.  You basically have to
reinstall the OS (since there's a platform change from sun4c to sun4m)
to do the upgrade.  But the drives all seemed to work.
