academic price for Solaris x86?

Post by James C. Le » Sat, 26 Apr 1997 04:00:00

Is there such a thing as academic pricing for Solaris x86? If so, who
are the resellers?

What's the difference among the different Solaris server packages? I
just need to run a Web server on dual-processor pentium machines. C
compiler is needed also.

Thanks for any pointers!

you'd probably be looking at getting a free web browser (like apache),
and gcc.  gcc is available precompiled for solaris x86 at sunsite.  i
don't think there is any license restrictions on the # of cpus, but i
suppose you should ask about that ;).  you should look at the hardware
compatibilty list for the motherboard you have.  this is also at sun's
website (start with http://www.sun.com/solaris/).

gcc is GNU.  No restrictions as long as you don't make money out of
selling it.

is that the cheapest prices?  or are there any academic software
resellers that offer a discount off the $99 list prices?

Thanks!

Normally, software resellers do not offer further discounts on top of an
academic price. (It would be very hard for them to make a profit in many
cases if they did). Besides $99.00 for Solaris x86 is not at all bad. :)
