Does anyone know whether Sun offers academic pricing? If so, where can one
purchase a Sparc 4 or 5--perhaps MIT?

i don't know if they offer academic pricing, but i know MIT updates
there system every 2 yrs, so they may be selling.

Well I was working for Project Athena until March and there were no
indication that they were getting rid of their older Suns. They however are
getting rid of Vax3100 machines and replacing them mostly with Suns, with
SparcClassic or Sparc5...
