If the drum kit is being played as melodic instruments, that usually
means that the synth has been told to allow channel 10 to use them (it
is unlikely that you are remapping drums to a different channel). One
way to make this happen, if you are using a Yamaha XG synth, is to use
an XG reset, and use files which use a patch number for the drums, but
not a Yamaha XG drum bank number as well. Easy fix -- set the program
to issue a GM or GS reset instead (XG files which use Yamaha XG drum
banks tend to have an XG reset in them).
The same could apply to other synths, which are able to allow the
drum channel (10) to be used for another instrument. Which synth you
use makes a difference, and for one with multiple modes, which reset
is used to initialize it.
