Cakewalk 8.01 won't send/recieve MIDI

Post by devl_.. » Fri, 06 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I'm using a Turtle Beach Malibu 64 sound card and a 15-pin joystick to
6-pin MIDI adapter to hook up my drum machine to the computer so I can
sequence it through Cakewalk. I selected the Roland MPU-401 for input
and output through the MIDI devices menu.
Cakewalk won't send or recieve external MIDI, instead it keeps
triggering the internal MIDI sounds on the sound card. I tried
reinstalling my sound card but it keeps doing this. Is this a driver
conflict? If so, where can I get the correct drivers.
 Someone please help.

Have you gone to "Tools", "Midi Devices" on the menues to
tell it to send through the MIDI OUT and receive from the
correct MIDI IN?

Yes, but it won't send out through the cable. It just keeps triggering
the internal sounds.

Go to tools/midi devices, and specify which ports to use.  Then once
you've done that, select the correct port on each channel.

I did that several times already! So I guess it's just a driver problem
then.

What you need to do is to:
a.  Right-click on the My Computer icon & select (left click)
Properties
b.  Expand (click the plus sign) on Sound, video and Game Controllers
c.  Highlight TBS Malibu Wavetable Synth (MPU-401), then click the
Properties button
d.  Click the Resources Tab
e.  *Unselect* the 'Use Automatic Settings' check box
f.  Click the Down Arrow next to the 'Setting based on' window, and
pick 'Basic Configuration 0002'
g.  There should now be a (new) interrupt request setting showing up
in the 'Resource Settings' window.  Highlight it, and look to see if
there is anything in the Conflicting Device List window.  If so, try
to change the interrupt number used to one that is not in use already.
h.  Click OK on all the windows till they're gone, then reboot.  It
should now work.
Note:  It took me almost 2 weeks of spare time to find this hidden in
the Turtle Beach website, under Malibu FAQs.  I'd think they would
maybe put it in their installation docs.  But NOooooo!
Anyway, good luck!

Go back to tools / midi devices / midi out (output devices)

Do you have a list of multiple items as: internal Turtle Beach and
MPU-401? Cakewalk can output to multiple devices and does so by taking
the first item on the list and assigning it as port 1. Second item on
list is port 2, and so on and so on.

Highlight MPU-401 and select "Move to top of list" This should assign
the MPU-401 as port 1. Now try playing your sequences.
