Dowding book on spacing

Post by BDAllen1 » Wed, 01 Feb 1995 19:15:24

I have been authorized by my friend Alan Stark (marketing director of the
publisher Hartley & Marks) to append the following information about a
book of interest to this group that is being re-published this spring
(this is an elaboration of Alan's original append some weeks ago):

Dowding: Finer Points in the Spacing and Arrangement of Type.
A significant revision of a long-unavailable classic manual that offers
in-depth investigations of every aspect of the use of type and space, from
letter and word arrangement to the design of type itself, to how type and
space affect each other in publication and advertising design. It is one
in the same a readable, absorbing and provocative book by an expert
English typographer who served as an instructor of typographic design at
the London College of Printing for over twenty years. Due out in paperback
in April from Harley & Marks for $14.95, ISBN 0-88179-119-9. Call
800-667-1366.

Disclaimer: as stated above, an acquaintance with the marketing guy; but
no financial interest in H & M. But I do wish them success in publishing
books about typography and printing.

Thanks for info!

I am certainly going to buy this book, and without info in this forum I
wouldn' know it existed.

So please, continue to give info on books of interest.

So feww good books are published on this subject that there is no danger of
drowning the forum with commercials.

Jan Gunnar

> ...Dowding: Finer Points in the Spacing and Arrangement of Type....

That _sounds_ like it would give concrete reasons for its suggestions; if
that's the case (someone who's read it, please confirm) I'll get it.  It
may shed some light on a discussion more notable for heat.  I've also
wondered about (and I hope it covers) things like inter-column spacing
(and how many columns at all), spacing around and within sidebars, headers
and footers, call-outs....  Thanks for the notice.

Another book that relates to letter spacing and letterforms is "The
Modification of Letterforms" by Stanley Hess (revised edition). This book
is filled with examples of how the design of letterforms relates to the
space that printed text occupies. The ISBN is 0-91058-79-7 for the paper-
back version, and 0-91058-78-9 for the clothbound.

I have no connections with the publisher or author; I just like the book!

1. Favourite Type Book? (Was: Book of Fonts?)

While we're on the subject of type books, how about an informal survey
of favourites? And before everyone starts saying 'The Elements of
Typographic Style' all at once, let's try to make it a little more
interesting by trying to think of something a bit less common. Let's
further broaden the scope by including not only books on type, but
also books which are simply very beautiful exemplars -- i.e. books you
cherish as much for their typography as for their content (or perhaps
more).

This is, perhaps, harder than it sounds; a fact I will acknowledge by
declining to go first.
