Problem receiving SMTP email through smarthost

Post by Klaas-Pieter Vlie » Mon, 04 Aug 1997 04:00:00

We are migrating from MS Mail 3.2 to Exchange 5.0

All mail to and from the Internet in our company goes through a so called
smarthost running sendmail on a UNIX box.

Sending emails to the Internet from Exchange works fine.
Receiving emails from the Internet doesn't work. Exchange sends a email to
the originator with the diagnostic "too many hops". Apparently Exchange
receives something, but it can't deliver it and sends it back to the
smarthost who sends it back to Exchange and so on ....

Our Smarthost with sendmail uses the 'aliases' file to map all our users
SMTP addresses to corresponding Exchange mailbox addresses. (The advantage
is that multiple email addresses can be allocated to a single user)

It's my feeling that the problem is caused in the configuration of the
aliases file.

there are 2 entries in the aliases file:

The SMTP address for the Exchange mailbox of user vlieg is

configured
Our domain is eurescom.de

The same scheme worked fine for MS Mail with the SMTP gateway. The
previously used aliases entries for me were:

If anybody knows how to configure our aliases file this would be greatly
appreciated.

1. Can't receive emails from sendmail smarthost

We have a so called smarthost with sendmail on it connected to the
Internet.
We just set up a Exchange 5.0 server with the IMC configured to use this
smarthost for sending to and receiving from the Internet.

Sending SMTP mails from a Exchange mailbox to the Internet works fine.
Receiving SMTP mails from the Internet doesn't work: the Exchange server
sends an error message to the sender with a "Too many hops" diagnostic.

On our smarthost we use the aliases file. I think the problem is caused by
wrong user entries in this file. Each user's SMTP email address(es) are
mapped to the user's Exchange server mailbox.

aliases file there are 2 entries:

The Exchange hostname is exchange.eurescom.de and DNS is properly
configured

Does anybody see what we configured wrong??

It worked fine previously when we used MS Mail with a SMTP gateway. We had
similar entries in the aliases file:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
