I cannot get the IMS to start when using the trial version of Exchange.
Are there known issues without the service packs or should I pursue this
further before installing the real thing?

Service Packs are designed to resolve issues... Of course it depends on what those issues are.

Have you reviewed the Event Viewer log to see exactly why the IMS won't start?

If you are using an ISP for mail forwarding make sure you have connectivity
to your ISP as It will not start if it can't see the mail sever. at the ISP

I am trying to connect to an internal Unix mail host. I can see the host, so
don't think that is the problem.

The Event Log says the MAPI could not be initialized with a 4018 error.
I also get an 0xc002041d  No start response for IMS (which I think is a result, not a cause).

If you are using de name of the unixserver, try the IP-Address instead. I'v
got cases where the resolving of the name was not working. When I used the
IP, he started and worked fine.

1. Exchange 5.5 Internet Mail service

The one of the internet mail service components is
running at between 35 and 75% cpu usage for long periods,
and the drive space on the secondary partition is filling
up.  How can I purge from mailboxes to try to regain
space, and what could cause the service components to run
so much?
