Moving Mailboxes

Moving Mailboxes

Post by Kag » Wed, 19 Jul 2000 04:00:00

I need to move my Exchange environment from an old server to a new one.
Any ideas on how to go about this and move the user mailboxes?

Also, we are going to setup OWA. Is there a way to update all my users'
mailboxes to allow OWA without having to open/modify each one individually?

Thanks,

Lots of ideas.

A good resource is www.deja.com/usenet to see if anybody else has asked this
question. Do a power search with "move server" against this newsgroup.

Microsoft also has an excellent web based help tool called the
Knowledgebase. www.microsoft.com Click on the support button top right.

Most people here will point you to:

Backups are always a good thing to have before attempting such things.

1. Moving mailbox using Exchange Administrator's Tools--->Move Mailbox

Current platform:
Exchange 5.5 with SP4

I need to move about 800 mailboxes from one Exchange server to another
Exchange server in same site.  I understand that Exchange admin's Move
mailbox will do this nicely for me.  I am planning to move my users on a
evening after hours.

Question 1:
What is the impact for users who leave their machine turned on and logged
into Outlook 2000 and I move their mailbox that evening.  Is that gonna
create a problem for me in the morning for those users whose mailbox was
moved and they had a Outlook 2000 session?  I am trying to avoid sending out
an e-mail to general public asking them to close Outlook before they leave.
Plus, my Exchange user community is about 1200.  And for me to sort out who
gets the e-mail and who doesn't would cause alot of extra work.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION BUT NEED TO VERIFY WITH THE GURUS HERE:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------
What if I were to stop and start the Exchange services on the source
Exchange server.  This will ensure that no end users has a Outlook 2000
connection open to my source serve.  After this step, I can start my move
mailbox procedure?  I mean does this make sense or is there a better
solution?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
