Guys,

I have a rather interesting issue with Exchange 2000 SP3
server. An SMTP
connector is configured which is forwarding ALL mail "*"
to a smart host
server. The settings I have for this connector are the
following:

General settings -
Forward all mail through smart host "mail.x.com"
Local bridgehead server "exchange1"

Content restrictions -
Settings left as default

Delivery options -
Settings left as default

Advanced -
Send HELO instead of EHLO

Delivery Restrictions -
By default, messages from everyone are Accepted
Reject messages from "NIL"

Address space -
Type = SMTP
Address = *
Cost = 1
Connector scope = Entire organization
Allow messages to be relayed to these domains option is
unchecked.

Connected Routing Groups
NIL.

The issue is when this connector is in use, or when I add
it to the Exchange
server, it returns random external specific SMTP
addresses. The Exchange
server has 3 domain names, and therefore it has 3
recipient policies. The
smart host is running Trend Micro IMSS.

A sample of a returned message is as follows:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended
recipients.

      Subject: Test message
      Sent: 27/06/2003 10:46 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

            A configuration error in the e-mail system
caused the message to
bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two
recipients.
Contact your administrator.
            <domainx.com #4.4.6>

Please note that this is a new Exchange organization and
is running in a
native mode state on a Windows 2000 network. There has
been no older
versions of Exhchange installed in this environment.

I have turned on logging in Exchange and have found the
following...

You are looping somewhere I think.

Do you have the SMTP virtual server settings as default ?

No outbound SMTP mail, 4.4.6 NDR code

Post by Ebony Smit » Wed, 02 Jul 2003 22:32:37

If you look at the configuration a little closer, you should find it.

Its a ping pong between the two servers due to a misconfiguration somewhere.
check smtp virtual server, smtp connectors, firewalls, spam relays etc

1. No outbound SMTP mail, 4.4.6 NDR code

Guys,

I have a rather interesting issue with Exchange 2000 SP3 server. An SMTP
connector is configured which is forwarding ALL mail "*" to a smart host
server. The settings I have for this connector are the following:

General settings -
Forward all mail through smart host "mail.x.com"
Local bridgehead server "exchange1"

Content restrictions -
Settings left as default

Delivery options -
Settings left as default

Advanced -
Send HELO instead of EHLO

Delivery Restrictions -
By default, messages from everyone are Accepted
Reject messages from "NIL"

Address space -
Type = SMTP
Address = *
Cost = 1
Connector scope = Entire organization
Allow messages to be relayed to these domains option is unchecked.

Connected Routing Groups
NIL.

The issue is when this connector is in use, or when I add it to the Exchange
server, it returns random external specific SMTP addresses. The Exchange
server has 3 domain names, and therefore it has 3 recipient policies. The
smart host is running Trend Micro IMSS.

A sample of a returned message is as follows:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

      Subject: Test message
      Sent: 27/06/2003 10:46 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

            A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to
bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients.
Contact your administrator.
            <domainx.com #4.4.6>

Please note that this is a new Exchange organization and is running in a
native mode state on a Windows 2000 network. There has been no older
versions of Exhchange installed in this environment.

Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
JP
