Thank you for your post.
William is correct that we have to first upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to 2000
and then upgrade to 2003. There is no way to upgrade directly from 5.5 to
2003 with a single server.

Even if I could only have temporary use of another server and had to
do two Exchange 2003 installs and mailbox moves I'd do that over two
upgrades in place.

We WERE running Exch5.5 on NT4 in an NT4 domain.
After a series of upgrades we now have:-
Exchange 5.5sp4 on Windows 2000sp4 server (member server) and rest of
domain is now 2003 AD.
Our Exchange infrastructure is simply single server single site witha
20Gb database and about 100 users.
We do not have AD connector installed for exchange.
Clearly the next stage is to upgrade to Exchange 2003 - probably on
same Windows 2000 server.
Reading around and searching google, I'm shocked (ish) that we can't
just sling an Exchange 2003 CD in and select "upgrade". Everyone
talks about installing another new 2003 server into same site, moving
mailboxes, then killing off old server.
But surely that will involve:-
- loosing Single-instance-storage - which is what Exchange is all
about. Our DB could grow 30-50% if we did this!
- Leaving remnents of old server around
- reconfiguring all PCs with new settings etc
SURELY there is a way to do inplace upgrades from 5.5 to 2003? Can we
go via Exchange 2000? If so, are there any issues going
5.5-->2000-->2003 in one step?
I'm hunting out detailed documentation and white-papers, but
Any comments/help welcome.
After XP and our recent W2K3 upgrades I've been really impressed with
MS (honest!) - but this is worrying....
