clients are not able to pick up their internet-(inTRAnet-)mails

Hi there!

Im very desperate because of an problem with our MS Exchange-Server and
I hope that there is someone out there who has the right hint to solve
this problem.

We just set up an MS NT 4.0 Server for our inTRAnet and thought about
using MS Exchange-Server for use of email. The problem is that we are
not able to collect/pick up the emails that are waiting to be delivered
on the Exchange-Server even if the whole tcp/ip communication seems
to function well (it is possible for the clients to send emails!).

I spent days reading manuals and online-help but so far I couldnt find
the right hint to solve the problem (as you will see below).

---  please help!!  ---

this is the situation:

# I just set up an inTRAnet for us using NT-Server 4.0 (no connection to
external networks at the moment).
# IIS, DNS, WINS, Service Pack3, TCP/IP are installed and seems to
function quiet well (thats what the "event-log" tells me)
# it was easy to install MS Exchange-Server 5.5 (Im using a
download-version that I got at microsoft.com)
# we called our machine "ers1" and we are using the DNS-domain
"wedit-dt.de" (so "ers1.wedit-dt.de" is the FQDN of the machine). This
machine is POP- and SMTP-Server.

# networkcommunication (NetBios, TCP/IP) seems to function well ("ping"
is functioning too)
# with aid of the log-functions of NT and Exchange-Server I have a good
overview of the communication that is taking place between clients and
the NT-Server in our LAN respectively in our NT-Domain.

this happens at the clients:

  - clients login at the mail-server is functioning
(Netscape-mail-client)
  - after login "the machine" tells me "no new messages on server"
  - sending of emails (e.g. to myself) is functioning too (there are
entries in the "sent-messages-folder" and also on the
Exchange-Server
I can monitor the success of the communication - there are entries
in
    the queues)
  - if clients try to receive new mails they only get the message "no
    new messages on server"

this happens at the Exchange-Server:

if clients are sending mails (info from "event log"):
  - a new TCP/IP SMTP connection has been received from host

if clients try to get their new mails (info from "event log"):
  - POP3 connection accepted
  - POP3 client successfully logged on to the mailbox
  - POP3 connection
  - authentical POP3-Client on mailbox sending command STAT
  - authentical POP3-Client on mailbox sending command Quit
  - closing POP3 connection
  - ... I think that this is the clients attempt to get his new mail

  - there is another info in the "event log" that must be important:
"directory operation (oem_get) failed with no data for type 723..."
and this must be the problem! ... "he" is not able to find the
mails in the directory where they are supposed to be
    (" \exchsrvr\imcdata\in\ "). When I check this directory I cant
find any files. Backups of the incoming mail are located in the
    "\exchsrvr\imcdata\in\archive\" directory.

  - I think that the Internet Mail Service transports the incoming
mails somewhere ... but I dont know where. At the Exchange-Server
(under "Internet Mail Service") I found this:
"Inbound Messages awaiting delivery"-folder is filled up with
entries of waiting ("pending") emails. Attempts to get detailed
information to the single pending messages failed ("... message has
    been deleted or delivered")
I AM SURE THAT WE WILL FIND THE PROBLEM (AND THE SOLUTION) SOMEWHERE
    IN THIS AREA!!

  - It looks like the mail are reaching the exchange mail-office but
there seems to bee a problem in transferring them (from the
mail-folders) to the mail-box (as I wrote above all files do exist
in the  "\exchsrvr\imcdata\in\archive\"-folder and seems to wait for
being delivered): email-contents and -addresses that I can read in
    theses files are correct!

So, this is my current nightmare ... and I started to think about MS
Exchange-caused suicide.

IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU WOULD HAVE THE RIGHT IND OF INFORMATION FOR ME
!!!!

Thank you very (very very) much to have taken the time to read this mail
!

Again, thanks and

best regards,

Fatima Abdallah

There is bug in the Exchange Eval.  Look at microsofts site and find
the patch and see if this fixes your problem.  Basically it has to do
with exchange being installed after 8-31-98.  None of the previous
posts mentioned using POP only, so this may be your problem.
