hi
i have exchange 5.5 .the total size of mailboxes from mailbox resource is
not equal to file size of edb.i have about 100% difference.

it is not the case.because the edb is 2 times greater than the total
mailboxes.i shutdown restarted the system.still problem.

The edb size will not increase before the logs are flushed. Restart your
server, and you can see the correct size.

Ok, then you probably need to run an offline defrag. There is a tool wich
follows SP3 i think. You will need to take down the system for some time to
do that.

i have sp4 and i just run defrag.should i run something else?

You have white space in your database.  If you check the Event Log for
EventID 1221, it will tell you how much.

White space is not of itself a bad thing - when new mail arrives, the white
space is used.  If there is no white space available, the database is forced
to expand.

Search the Knowledge Base for "offline defragmentation" if you want to read
how to remove this white space and reduce the size of the database.  Also
look for reasons why you should and should not do this.
