Exchange/Outlook CC errors with Internet/Intranet mail

Exchange/Outlook CC errors with Internet/Intranet mail

Thanks for the offer of help.  Here is my dilema.

First of all, let me describe the hardware and software we are using.  We
are currently using 2-Pentium III's as Novell 3.2 fileservers (both with
128Mb ECC SDRAM), 1-Pentium III as an NT 4.0 Server with service pack 3
applied (also with 128Mb ECC SDRAM), with Exchange Server 5.5 loaded and
running, and 1-Pentium 233 (with 64Mb EDO DRAM) as a stand alone mail/proxy
server.  We are connected to DSL services through 2-3COM NIC's in the Proxy
server (1-incoming and 1-outgoing).  We are using Outlook 98 as our client
and have "Net Folders" installed for shared calendar/task information.

The problem occurs when we send to an outside address (internet address) and
CC an inside address (intranet address) or vice versa.  The Internet address
recepient is sent to successfully while the remaining internal CC's are
returned to the sender with an error message.  Everything works correctly
when all internet OR intranet addresses are used.  The errors seem to occur
only a combination of both is used, i.e. To... Intranet address, Cc...
Internet address.

Here are the error messages I receive.  This first is for an Internet To...
and an Intranet Cc...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: Test internet To..., intranet Cc...
      Sent: 07/13/1999 11:04 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

Bob Rodrigue on 07/13/1999 11:04 AM
The originator does not have permission to submit message
            MSEXCH:MSExchangeIS:NT(u)1:NT(u)EXCHANGE

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------

In this case I am the originator and the message was being submitted to
myself.  It doesn't seem to matter who the Cc recepient is, the message is
consistently returned with the error.

This second example is from an Intranet To... and an Internet Cc...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: Test Intranet To..., Internet Cc...
      Sent: 07/13/1999 11:05 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

Bob Rodrigue on 07/13/1999 11:05 AM
The originator does not have permission to submit message
            MSEXCH:MSExchangeIS:NT(u)1:NT(u)EXCHANGE

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------

As you can see, both of the external internet addresses were sent, while the
internal intranets were returned with this error.  If I click on the error
messages and click resend, the original messages are resent to the lost
recepients successfully.  Although this works as a workaround, if I have
several Cc...'s that have failed, I need to resend each one individually and
that takes up more time.

Hope you can help me with this complication.   Please respond to my email
also...

Thanks,

Bob Rodrigue

1. Help: Cannot Receive External Internet Mail After Switching from CC:mail to Exchange

Can't seem to find a solution to this problem....I've found lots of
knowledgebase articles but so far nothing describing my particular
situation.

We have been using CC:mail with an SMTP gateway to the internet which works
fine.  It connects through a webramp to our ISP.   The webramp (at 410i) is
set to map all port 25 traffic to our SMTP gateway computer.

We have been piloting exchange and can send internet mail out without a
problem.  Today we tried to change the webramp to route all port 25 traffic
to it to the exchange server as opposed to our CC:mail SMTP gateway machine.
After making the change, the SMTP gateway still intercepted all of the mail.

We rebooted the webramp, and the CC:mail SMTP gateway machine stopped
intercepting the mail, but our Exchange server still did not seem to receive
any mail.  We sent multiple messages from different mail accounts from the
outside from different ISP's but nothing came through.  Eventually, we had
to get 'back up and running' so people could get email, so we reconfigured
the webramp to route all port 25 traffic back to our CC:mail SMTP gateway
and rebooted our webramp...within an hour, all of the messages that I had
sent to the Exchange Server (but never arrived), started showing up at our
CC:mail SMTP gateway (indicating to me, that the original attempts, failed,
and that after an hour, had been retried, and this time, something
answered...in this case, our CC:mail SMTP gateway).

Any ideas as to why our Exchange server didn't accept the mail from the
outside?  From our ISP's point of view, it should still be connecting to the
same IP address at the webramp right?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks :)
