MTA Service and Corrupt .dat files in MTADATA directory

Post by David Sande » Sat, 12 Sep 1998 04:00:00

We're all a bit confused by this one:

System:
Compaq Proliant 2500 256 MB RAM and Plenty of free space on Disks
NT4.0 with SP3 and Exchange 5.5 without SP1
The server is dedicated as an Exchange server

We've got a single exchange server that has an internet connector set
up and until 3 days ago the server has been running fine.  For some
reason now we are getting a recurring problem:  The first indicator is
that the Application log is full with about 40 entries per second of
event ID 2110 and 2171 - Log displays many instances of event ID 2110
and so I looked up information on Technet about the error which had me
stop the MTA service and Internet mail service,  run MTACheck (which
reported that it could not correct the errors), and then
Rename/Delete/Get rid of the .dat file(s) that were causing the
problem.  I removed the problem .dat files (sometimes there is only
one, sometimes two) and restarted the MTA service.  The problem goes
away for a while and then reappears about 30 minutes later.  The last
time the problem occurred there was a new entry in the application
log, Event 2025, though I don't know if that is significant.  Technet
says that the problem usually has to do with corrupted emails coming
in from the internet, but with it recurring like this I'm need to know
if there's something wrong with the exchange server or if something
out there is continually sending bad emails into our system.  I've had
to clean up this problem 6 times so far today, but it is still
occurring.  Also, the problem .dat files are exponentially larger than
the non-problem .dat files.

If anyone has ever seen anything related to this problem I would

Below are the errors in the applications event log.  Also included is
a log file that I found in the MTADATA directory related to the
problem.  The log file was for a different instance of the same
problem, but the errors in the application log are the same except for
the objects (.dat files).

Event 2025:
"The delivery of a message failed due to error 000004DD.  A

MTA Service and Corrupt .dat files in MTADATA directory

Post by anonymou » Sun, 13 Sep 1998 04:00:00

First step, is to stop the MSexchangeMTA.
in the exchsrvr\mtadata Dir. there is a file named dbserver.sch, compare the
byte count of the file with the one in the mtadata Dir. on the RTM CD. Some
time this will becom corrupt and cause problems. If the file size matches,
go ahead and replace it with the one on the CD, just remember to remove the
read only attribute before running mtacheck, and then restart the MTA.  If
this does not work for you, Chances are that you may need to do an mta
reset/wipe.
